Waging Peace, Middle East Program

As part of the Northeast Ohio AFSC Wage Peace Campaign, we conduct numerous initiatives that address the human cost of the war in Iraq, the financial cost of the war here at home, provide youth with truthful information on military recruitment and much more.

As part of both our Middle East Programming & Wage Peace Campaign, our Iraq projects include:

  • Eyes Wide Open - A profound exhibit on the human cost of war.
  • Truth-in-Recruitment - A program designed to provide the public with timely and insightful information on the realities of military recruitment during times of war.

EYES WIDE OPEN OHIO

Eyes Wide Open_Ohio BootsBoots of Fallen Ohio Soldier - AFSC

Eyes Wide Open Ohio is the American Friends Service Committee’s widely-acclaimed touring exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War, which features a pair of combat boots honoring each U.S. military casualty, a field of shoes and a Wall of Remembrance to memorialize the Iraqis killed in the conflict.

The Ohio exhibit contains one pair of combat boots for each military casualty from our state.

Honoring both US military casualties and Iraqi civilians alike, this traveling exhibit is a memorial to those who have fallen and a witness to our belief in the sanctity of all life and humanity's collective responsibility to promote peace.

The exhibit can be hosted by any number of organizations - churches, schools, community organizations, peace groups, etc. To find out how your organization can host this timely and moving exhibit, please contact Leah Davis at (330) 928-2301 or email ldavis@afsc.org.

Please visit the Ohio's Eyes Wide Open site for detailed information on the exhibit.

Truth in Recruitment

During a time when our nation is engaged in wars and occupations in both Iraq & Afghanistan, honest and accessible information on military recruitment and service is greatly needed.

Public schools are frequent targets of military advertising, military youth programs, and visits by military recruiters. The No Child Left Behind Act guarantees recruiters the right to private contact information for all secondary school students, so that students may also be contacted at home. Many school administrators and teachers are unaware of, or turn a blind eye to, recruiter abuses of their privileges.

In response, the Northeast Ohio American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), in collaboration with our National Youth and Militarism Program, conducts numerous projects to educate the public on military recruitment.

We offer:

  • An alternatives to the military handbook, “Making the Connection,” which features 42 pages of local and national career and schooling opportunities that encourage students to follow their dreams without feeling the pressure to join the military under false pretenses. The handbook also includes career planning, personal growth, youth leadership and independent living information.
  • Information on the No Child Left Behind Act and how this affects military recruiters access to children.
  • Easy access to the OPT-OUT Form, available to parents to prevent military recruiters from contacting their children.
  • "Before You Enlist" Information Guides These guides include information on military recruiters in your area, Do You Know Enough to Enlist brochures, and information sheets for youth who may be speaking to recruiters. Information sheets include questions youth should be sure to ask recruiters when speaking to them and the honest answers they should be given.

For detailed information, to obtain a booklet or to download guides for free, please visit our Youth & Militarism site and conctact Leah Davis at (330) 928-2301 or email ldavis@afsc.org
